Understanding FAA Delay Types

Severe

Ground Stops

No flights are allowed to depart for the affected airport. The most severe delay type, typically caused by severe weather, equipment failure, or security incidents. Duration: 30 min to 3+ hours.

Moderate

Ground Delay Programs

Flights are held at departure airports to manage arrival traffic flow. Delays are assigned before takeoff to reduce airborne holding. Duration: 15 min to 2 hours.

Advisory

Weather & Operational

Departure and arrival delays from congestion, weather, or airspace flow programs. Includes AFP and general operational delays. Duration: 15 min to 90 min.

How It Works

01

FAA Data Feed

We pull data directly from the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center, the same source used by airlines and ATC.

02

Smart Detection

Our system classifies each delay type, calculates severity, and identifies the affected airports and routes in real time.

03

Instant Alerts

Premium members receive push notifications the moment a delay affects their watched airports. Free users get updates every 15-30 minutes.

What Causes Airport Delays?

~65%

Weather

Thunderstorms, fog, snow, ice, and high winds are the single biggest cause of flight delays in the US.

~20%

Air Traffic Volume

When too many flights are scheduled into an airport, the FAA issues ground delay programs to meter arrivals.

~10%

Equipment & Staffing

Aircraft mechanical issues, crew scheduling problems, and ATC staffing shortages can cascade into widespread delays.

~5%

Other Factors

Runway construction, security incidents, bird strikes, VIP movements, and military airspace restrictions.

How to Handle Flight Delays

Check FlightQueue before you leave

Monitor this page for live FAA delays. If your destination airport has a ground stop, there is no reason to rush to the gate.

Sign up for push notifications

FlightQueue Premium members get instant alerts when delays hit their saved airports, so you are never caught off guard.

Know your passenger rights

In the EU, you may be entitled to up to €600 in compensation for long delays. US airlines must rebook you on the next available flight at no extra cost.

Arrive early on bad-weather days

Security lines spike when flights bunch up after delays. Give yourself an extra 30–45 minutes on stormy days.

Have a backup plan

Know alternate routes and airlines. If your flight cancels, being first to call the airline or rebook via the app can save hours of waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there airport delays today?
Check the live status cards at the top of this page. We pull data directly from the FAA's Air Traffic Control System Command Center, which reports ground stops, ground delay programs, and other delays as they happen.
What causes airport delays?
Weather is the #1 cause (~65%), followed by air traffic volume (~20%), equipment/staffing issues (~10%), and other factors like construction or security incidents (~5%).
How do I check if my flight is delayed?
Search for your departure or arrival airport on FlightQueue to see real-time conditions including FAA delays, TSA wait times, and terminal status.
What is a ground stop?
A ground stop (GS) means the FAA has ordered that no flights may depart for a specific airport. It is the most severe type of delay and is usually caused by severe weather or a security incident.
What is a ground delay program?
A Ground Delay Program (GDP) assigns specific departure times to flights heading to a congested airport. Instead of circling in the air, planes wait at their origin gate.
How long do airport delays usually last?
Minor delays add 15-30 minutes. Ground delay programs typically last 1-3 hours. Ground stops can last from 30 minutes to half a day depending on severity.
Am I entitled to compensation for a delayed flight?
In the US, airlines are not required to compensate for delays but must rebook you. For EU-originating flights, EC 261 rules may entitle you to up to €600 for delays over 3 hours.
