VFRVisual Flight Rules

Ceiling > 3,000 ft and visibility > 5 SM. Clear conditions, minimal delay risk.

MVFRMarginal VFR

Ceiling 1,000-3,000 ft or visibility 3-5 SM. Some restrictions, minor delays possible.

IFRInstrument Flight Rules

Ceiling 500-1,000 ft or visibility 1-3 SM. Reduced capacity, delays likely.

LIFRLow IFR

Understanding Aviation Weather Reports

METAR (Current Conditions)

  • Temperature and dewpoint in Celsius
  • Wind direction, speed, and gusts in knots
  • Visibility in statute miles or meters
  • Cloud layers with altitude and coverage

TAF (Forecast)

  • Covers 24-30 hours from issue time
  • TEMPO: temporary changes, BECMG: gradual transitions
  • PROB groups indicate likelihood of conditions
  • FM groups mark when new conditions begin
