American Airlines Check-In Cutoff Times

You arrive after the counter cuts off: American Airlines staff will refuse to issue a boarding pass for your booked flight. You will be marked a no-show, and your fare rules determine whether you get rebooked or forfeit the ticket. American Airlines typically rolls eligible passengers onto the next American Airlines flight as standby, often free if seats are open.

You have a boarding pass but missed bag drop: If you already checked in online but reached the bag drop counter after 45 minutes before departure (domestic) or 60 minutes before departure (international), the agent can refuse to accept the bag. Some hubs let you gate-check a carry-on at no charge if you ditch the checked bag plan; many will not.

Doors are already closed: Boarding doors close 15 minutes before departure. Once the door is shut, the flight is released — pleading at the gate will not get you on. Your only recourse is the rebooking desk or customer service line (1-800-433-7300).
