Where this data comes from

Wait-time estimates combine live airline and airport APIs, historical passenger-flow patterns, and crowd reports submitted by travellers on the ground through FlightQueue. EES kiosk queues apply only to non-EU travellers arriving at external Schengen borders — EU, EEA and Swiss nationals use separate e-gates and are not tracked here. Per-airport detail pages break out passport control, EES kiosks and security queues independently so you can plan around the checkpoint that actually affects you.

FAQ

Why are European airports so delayed right now?

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) went fully live on 10 April 2026 across 29 Schengen countries, replacing passport stamps with biometric kiosks for non-EU travellers. First-time registration adds 3-7 minutes per passenger and, combined with Easter peak traffic, has triggered multi-hour queues at hubs like Paris-CDG, Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt, Madrid and Rome Fiumicino.

What is EES and why is it causing queues?

EES is an EU-wide biometric border system that records fingerprints and a facial image for non-EU visitors on their first short-stay entry. Because the initial enrolment is slower than a passport stamp and not all airports have enough self-service kiosks yet, many border halls are processing travellers at a fraction of their pre-EES throughput — especially during peak morning and evening waves.

Which European airports have the worst delays right now?

As of this update, the worst sustained queues have been reported at Brussels (BRU), Paris-CDG and Paris-ORY, Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), Madrid-Barajas (MAD), Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Barcelona-El Prat (BCN). Several Spanish and French airports briefly suspended departure biometric collection to clear backlogs. The live table on this page ranks airports by reported first-entry processing time.

Will European airport delays get better by summer 2026?

Operators expect gradual improvement as more self-service kiosks come online and returning travellers — whose biometrics are already on file — replace first-entry passengers. However, EU agencies and airport groups have publicly warned that summer 2026 peak travel could still see 2-3 hour queues at the largest hubs unless additional e-gates are installed and staffing is increased.

Where is FlightQueue getting this data?

FlightQueue combines live airline and airport APIs, historical passenger-flow patterns, and crowd-sourced reports submitted by travellers on the ground. The live ranking reflects airports with current operator-confirmed issues plus airports whose first-entry processing time is trending above the Schengen-wide average of ~5 minutes per traveller.

Does this page cover non-Schengen European airports?

No — this dashboard focuses on the 29 Schengen countries where EES applies at the border. London Heathrow, Dublin, Istanbul and other non-Schengen airports have separate wait-time pages; they are not affected by EES because they are not external Schengen borders for non-EU arrivals.
