Ground Stop

An FAA-imposed order that halts all departures to a specific airport due to severe conditions.

What is GS?

A Ground Stop (GS) is an FAA traffic management initiative that completely halts all aircraft destined for a specific airport from departing their origin airports. Unlike Ground Delay Programs which assign specific departure times, ground stops completely freeze departures until conditions improve. Ground stops are typically implemented when conditions at the destination airport are severe enough that no flights can safely land, such as during major thunderstorms, extremely low visibility, runway closures, or security incidents.

Common Causes

  • Severe thunderstorms or weather
  • Low visibility conditions (fog, snow)
  • Runway closures or emergencies
  • Equipment or infrastructure failures
  • Security incidents

Impact & Duration

Impact Level

High - All affected flights are held at their origin airports until the ground stop is lifted

Typical Duration

30 minutes to several hours, depending on the cause

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my flight during a ground stop?

Your aircraft will be held at the departure airport until the ground stop is lifted. You may remain at the gate, or if already boarded, you might wait on the tarmac or return to the gate depending on expected duration.

How long do ground stops typically last?

Ground stops vary widely from 30 minutes to several hours. Weather-related ground stops are lifted once conditions improve, while equipment-related stops may take longer to resolve.

Will I be compensated for a ground stop delay?

Ground stops are considered weather or extraordinary circumstances, so airlines typically are not required to provide compensation. However, airlines may offer meals, hotel accommodations, or rebooking for extended delays.

How can I check if there is a ground stop at my airport?

You can check FlightQueue's real-time FAA delays page, the FAA's Air Traffic Control System Command Center website, or your airline's app for current ground stop information.
