Ground Stop
An FAA-imposed order that halts all departures to a specific airport due to severe conditions.
A Ground Stop (GS) is an FAA traffic management initiative that completely halts all aircraft destined for a specific airport from departing their origin airports. Unlike Ground Delay Programs which assign specific departure times, ground stops completely freeze departures until conditions improve. Ground stops are typically implemented when conditions at the destination airport are severe enough that no flights can safely land, such as during major thunderstorms, extremely low visibility, runway closures, or security incidents.
- Severe thunderstorms or weather
- Low visibility conditions (fog, snow)
- Runway closures or emergencies
- Equipment or infrastructure failures
- Security incidents
